ReplyDelete2.Drives such as USB sticks infected with the virus trick users into installing the worm, according to researchers.The "Autoplay" function in Vista and early versions of Windows 7 automatically searches for programs on removable drives
3.However, the virus hijacks this process, masquerading as a folder to be opened. When clicked, the worm installs itself. It then attempts to contact one of a number of web servers, from which it could download another program that could take control of the infected computer.

http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/01/20/white.house.website/index.html
2. Write a summary statement based upon the author's point of view.
Like, the presidency, the website has also undergone change. Right when Obama was inagurated, wwww.whitehouse.gov relaunched a new template and design for the president's website. It includes a photo gallery, visitors are invited to email the president, and experts say it is more dynamic than Bush's old site.
3.Write 4 facts that support the summary and point of view.
First fact: "The new design includes more interactive features, a prominent photo gallery displayed across the top of the site, the ability to get e-mail updates, and a White House blog."
Second fact: "The site's "briefing room" also includes places for a weekly video address, slide shows, proclamations, and executive orders as well as news about nominations and appointments."
Third fact: "Visitors to the site are invited to e-mail the president and his staff, although -- perhaps in a nod to the Twittersphere, where brevity is key -- comments are limited to 500 characters."
Fourth fact: "Obama was hailed throughout his campaign and transition as a politician who makes clever use of technology to communicate his message."
4. Formulate a prediction (reaching a conclusion; what will happen next) from the summary and facts and point of view.
I predict that the site will get a lot of hits and that it will encourage people to become more interactive with the president and more knowledgeable about the Country's affairs and issues.

ReplyDeletehttp://www.cnn.com/2008/SPORT/11/04/solar.sails/index.html
2.Sydney-based technology company Solar Sailor is working on a "solar sail". This could greatly reduce fuel consumption. Some large yachts hold movie theaters and other energy wasting features. By having the solar sails, the consumption of energy can be cut down a lot.
3. Fact 1: "Some of the ocean-going beasts like Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's "Dubai," the biggest private super-yacht in the world, are over 150 meters long and contain amenities like aircraft hangars, movie theaters, Jacuzzis, and swimming pools."
Fact 2: "A design project is currently underway in the United Kingdom to create a solar sail for the super-yachts, he said."
Fact 3: "Dane estimated the sail could save about 5 percent in fuel consumption from the solar power and another 20 to 40 percent from wind power when the vessel is traveling at 18 knots."
Fact 4: "Fuel consumption estimates on super-yachts have ranged up to one liter of fuel per second when traveling at high power. "
4. I predict that once this is developed and made mainstream for yacht owners, it will prove to be very helpful to the environment, and could also save yacht owners money in the long run.

6. What were the problems that Apple were facing with the MobileMe?
7. I think that Google is doing a good job expanding its venues, but shouldn't waste resources trying every available field of expertise. Also, I think that Apple should focus on its computer and phone departments instead of divulging into a new field simply in efforts to compete with Google, because ultimately it will fail and result in a huge loss of money.

Chapter 3 Review
• Bloolean Variables: The operators that allow you to combine two or more conditions into one compound
Ex: If you want the picture to move, you put “true” in the moving code, and if you don’t you type “false”
• Block Scope: The scope of block-level variables, which can be used only within the statement block in which the are declared
Ex: the identifier red has block scope and blue has file scope:
int blue = 5; /* blue: file scope */
main ()
{
int x = 0 , y = 0; /* x and y: block scope */
int red = 10; /* red: block scope */
x = red + blue;
}
• Convert Class: This class contains methods that return the result of converting a value to a specified data type.
Ex: System.Convert
[Visual Basic]
NotInheritable Public Class Convert
[C#]
public sealed class Convert
[C++]
public __gc __sealed class Convert
[JScript]
public class Convert
• Comments: Used to document a program internally; created using the apostrophe.
Ex: If you want to make a comment of sommething, you type it additionally, such as “not moving”
• Empty String: A set of quotation marks within nothing between them; also called a zero-length string.
Ex: - Static Equals method
This has the same semantics as 1 but uses different syntax. I haven't seen this method used as often.
string.Equals(str, "")
• Focus Method: Used to move the focus to a control while an application is running
EX:
• Format Specifier: Determines the special characters that will apear in a formatted number.
Ex: Suppose nVar is an integer variable, and the Watch window shows that it contains the value 0x0065. To see value expressed as a character instead of an integer, in the Name column, after the variable name, add the character format specifier, c:
nVar,c
Instead of the integer value 0x0065, the Value column now displays the character value, 101 'e'.
• Identifier: The name of an object
Ex: ABCbutton
• Literal Constant: An item of data whose value does not change to a different data type.
Ex: When Option Strict is On, you must declare all constants explicitly with a data type. In the following example, the data type of MyByte is explicitly declared as data type Byte:
• Literal Type Character: A character used to convert a literal constant to a different data type.
Ex: $ ; String ; Dim V$ = "Secret"
• Line Contuation Character: An underscore, which must be preceded by a space; used to break up a long instruc tion into two or more physical lines in the Code Editor Window.
Ex: WebServiceName = "GoogleSearchService"; WebServicePort = "GoogleSearchPort";EndPoint = "http://api.google.com/search/beta2"; Method = "doGoogleSearch";
Params = {"v6AP2gpQFHLqmV3kKYYkSwkVanXec1Ym", \ "Google Web APIs", \ 0, \ 1, \ false, \ "", \ false, \ "", \ "latin1", \ "latin1"};
Results = WSInvoke(WebServiceName, WebServicePort, EndPoint, Method, Params);
• Lifetime: Indicates how long a variable remains in the computer ‘s internal memory.
Ex: you make a variable estay for 20 times you open it.
• Method: A predefined Visual Basic procedure that you can call (or invoke) when needed. A method performes a task for the class in which it is defined.
Ex: cbl thread,pgmname(longmixed)
Identification Division.
Class-id. Account inherits Base.

• Module Scope: Referes to the scope of a module-level variable, which can be used to by all the procedures in the current form.
Ex: The space between Variable A1 and variable B2
• Procedure Scope: The scope of a procedure-level variable.
Ex: The slope between B2 and A1.
• Precendence numbers: Indicate the order in which the computer performs and operation (such as an arithmetic operation) in an expression.
Ex: most calculators use operator precedence parsers to convert from infix notation with order of operations (the usual format humans use for mathematical expressions) into a different format they use internally to compute the result.
• String: A group of characters enclosed in quotation marks.
Ex: “abcdfg1234”
• Scope: Indicates where a variable can be used in the application’s code.
Ex: Scopes provide a way to organize the activities within your BPEL process. They also provide context for variables, fault handling, compensation, event handling, and correlation sets.
• Static Variable: A procedure-level variable that retains its value when the procedure ends.
Ex:
• TryParse method: Used to convert a string to a number.
Ex:
• Pseucode: Used phrases to describe the steps a procedure needs to take to accomplish its goal.

2. Red Flag is a training base where fighter pilots come to partake in dogfight simulations with veteran pilots who playact as Soviet interlopers. This allows the Air Force to keep their pilots' skills honed for any type of threat facing them. However, some people might think this is unnecessary considering that the U.S. has complete air superiority in all situations. The only real threat is that aeronautical advancements being made by China, and even then, war with China is only theoretical. However, something more common in the battlefield is the implementation of remote-controlled drones that save lives; nevertheless, pilots argue that they are less maneuverable and are not as well-performing as fight planes. Only time will tell if the human pilot will become outdated.

While Internet phone services have long been seen as a low-cost threat to companies like AT&T (NYSE: T) , analysts say built-in restrictions and the audience likely to use Skype on an iPhone shouldn't concern Apple's (Nasdaq: AAPL) wireless partner.
3. If you already have a Skype account, the new free iPhone app will let you make calls to other Skype users at no charge. Calls from Skype accounts to landline or cell phones will be charged at cheaper rates. Those calls won't be made on cellular networks; the Skype app will only be available via WiFi network. 3. Ashton Kutcher started a sort of competition to try to get more followers on Twitter than CNN; When Barbara Walters talked about Twitter on "The View" the interest and flood of people crashed the site; Oprah is going to host a "Twitter Show" to cover Twitter and explain it to her fans; Some celebs like Shaq provide some useful info, but others act like its a representation of their popularity.
4. I predict that Oprah will go on with her show tomorrow and the amount of people who go on Twitter following will, once again, crash the site.
5. Because people like Ashton and Oprah don't post anything useful, people who visit and follow Twits such as these will get a bad image of the site and misunderstand it's meaning.

I think the best way to protect yourself from being scammed is to protect your identity and your account. The best thing you can do, in my opinion, is to keep your username and password secret and not to share it with anyone.

2.The government passed a law to make high power lasers for the military.We now have low powered lasers but cannot destroy something or an individual.But there is some ethical questions of doing such things.
3.a. A "shoot-down" test from a 747 is planned for the end of 2009.
b. U.S. Army had awarded the company a $36-million-dollar contract to develop a high-powered laser weapon.
c. an additional $30 million in funding will be allocated to develop a missile defense program
d. Lasers are currently used on the battlefield for targeting and tagging enemy units. For example, the LDART (Laser Detection and Reciprocal Targeting)
4.The military will be able to develop the high powered lasers and the military will be even more powerful.
5.Lasers are currently used on the battlefield for targeting and tagging enemy units. For example, the LDART (Laser Detection and Reciprocal Targeting) system can read whether a vehicle has been "painted" by a laser, and warn troops of impending threats. Lasers are also used for missile guidance and to determine the range of objects on the battlefield as a guide in troop advancement.
6.Why is there an ethics problem with high powered lasers?
7.I think high powered lasers will bring the military to a whole new level. With a bullett, theres a chance to live. But with a laser, it probably will burn your body all at once, but if not it will basically taser you for the rest of your life( probably 5 minutes) an will slowly burn the rest of your body at about lets say,500,000 F( im just guessing I have no clue exactly but its probably even higher). So ya Im all for Lasers.

1. 'Tongue computing' could help disabled
ReplyDeletehttp://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/ptech/08/25/tongue.computing.ap/index.html
2. This article talk about how disabled people could use their tongue as a joystick and their teeth for a keyboard for the computer.
3. "You could have full control over your environment by just being able to move your tongue," said Maysam Ghovanloo.
The group's Tongue Drive System turns the tongue into a joystick of sorts, allowing the disabled to manipulate wheelchairs, manage home appliances and control computers.
"This could give you an almost infinite number of switches and options for communication," said Mike Jones, a vice president of research and technology at the Shepherd Center.
And while newer innovations that track eye movement are promising, they can be costly, slow and susceptible to mixed signals.
4. I think that this will be used by many disabled people around the world because like the article says the tongue is more flexible and it’s not very tiring to move your tongue around.
5. A Palo Alto, Calif.-based company, newAbilities Systems Inc., has already designed a nine-button keypad placed on the roof of the mouth to control electronics.
The tongue's promise has long enticed scientists. In the 1960s, research work focused on turning the tongue into a primitive lens by attaching electrodes to the tissue. More recent studies have connected a camera that activates tongue electrodes in the shape of an object, helping blind people sense images.

ReplyDelete1. “Oil prices settle at $114 on stronger dollar” http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12400801/
ReplyDelete2. The author’s point of view is to inform us about the drop in gas changes by the barrel. The price has dropped to six dollars a barrel on Friday. This was the biggest one day percentage plunge in nearly four years after a rebounding dollar. Also the prices at the pump also have gone down. So the author is trying to tell about the gas price changes that are going on today.
3. One fact is that this is one of the largest gas drops in nearly for years. After a rebounding dollar Russian troops pulled back in Georgia. At the pump regular gas dropped a penny. Lastly people are buying more gas barrels because the price went down.
4. My prediction is that the more the people buy of the gas the more supply there is. Meaning that prices will go up and less people would want to buy. This will conclude to gas prices lowering again because the supply is not high. So the prices in the future will just go up and down and never at a steady price.
5. Some background information is that the prices at the pump went down a penny. On Thursday worries about Russian hostiles helped push crude prices up $5.62 to $121.18. There are still problems about Russia withdrawing from Georgia.
6. What I did not understand from the article is that why people want to use gas all the time and not come up with alternative fuels. It would save a lot of money and it’s good for the environment.

4. I think that in response to this, most developers will just alter their apps in response if they must, but this announcement probably wont have a huge effect on anybody.
5. It is said that if an app uses an UIAlertView it will probably have to make program changes for the new version.
6. I didn't understand what UIAlertView was.
7. In my opinion, this was a fairly minimal issue. Most of the developers will not be effected by this, and if they are, it probably will not be a huge issue to re-write parts of their codes.

2. Write a summary statement based upon the author's point of view. CEO Schmidt is being investigated for his role on the Google and Apple boards.

He echoed that sentiment when a shareholder later asked him to step down from Apple's board to avoid further government scrutiny.
Google attorney Kent Walker confirmed the Mountain View-based company is in talks with the Federal Trade Commission about whether its overlapping board relationships with Apple violates federal antitrust laws. The inquiry was reported by The New York Times earlier this week.

2. Passwords are ideally made up of different numbers and letters that are randomized and differ in capitalization. However, it is hard to memorize these passwords. Therefore, one can use mnemonics to help with the memorization.
3. Software has been created to help manage passwords.
Many people make the mistake of writing the password down and keeping it in plain sight
Many people write simple passwords that are easy to crack.
Some people make the mistake of using personal information to create a password, such as birthdate or name.

1. The Palm Pre Will Be an iPhone Killer; http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/162528/the_palm_pre_will_be_an_iphone_killer.html
ReplyDelete2. At the recent Consumer Electronics Show, Palm surprised many people by unveiling a new touch-screen phone that could be the closest rival to the iPhone.
3. The Pale Pre has a physical keyboard that is easy to use; The Palm Pre has a removable battery and larger memory than the iPhone; The Palm Pre is smaller than the iPhone; The Palm Pre runs using a webOS interface that makes browsing the internet easier by allowing for multiple programs to run at once and to have multiple windows open at once.
4. I predict that when the Palm Pre releases, it will put a good dent in the iPhone's sales numbers, but I don't think that it will replace the iPhone as the most popular touch screen phone.
5. Since the iPhone's release, Palm has not developed any other type of phone or released anything onto the market.
6. I did not understand how the Palm Pre can integrate your contacts using multiple social networking services.
7. In my opinion, Palm did what every other phone company should have done: Spend a lot of time developing something great and new instead of developing a lot of less important products that will fall prey to the competition.
8. Taking into consideration the pros and cons of both the iPhone and the Palm Pre, which would you say you liked more?
Response to Micheal Huang's Question: No, I have not directly been a victim of internet crime. I have however suffered from viruses, worms, spyware, and spam.

1. Net Set For New Wrinkle From Conficker Worm
ReplyDelete2. Analysts say that the new program change that occurs on April 1st will not cause a cataclysmic event. In fact, experts say that it will only expand the list of sites Conficker will try to take over.
3. Conficker is a worm, a type of malicious program.
Conficker tries to attack 250 domains every day.
Conficker will generate a list of 50,000 domains that it's "botnet" will try to invade.
Human involvement is not necessary for Conficker to attack a computer.
4. I think tht although Conficker may be a new and strong type of virus, I doubt that it is something that veteran programmers and internet security experts will not be able to stop.
5. Conficker invades a computer and controls it remotely and then uses it and other infected computers in order to create a type of online supercomputer that registers websites to attack and then sends commands to machines to invade more machines.
6. Nothing.
7. I think that the people who have spread the conficker virus are wrong in doing so and I hope that they fail in their attempts to steal money.
8. Do you think that creating malicious programs and using them against others is morally correct?
1. 'Major discovery' from MIT primed to unleash solar revolution
ReplyDeletehttp://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2008/oxygen-0731.html
2. MIT researchers have overcome a major barrier to large-scale solar power. They have found out how to to store it more inexpensivly and figured out how to use it in the night time.
3. Solar power has always been a limited, far-off solution, now we can seriously think about solar power as unlimited and soon. Some scientists have developed something that will allow the sun's energy to be used to split water into hydrogen and oxygen gases. Later, the oxygen and hydrogen may be recombined inside a fuel cell, creating carbon-free electricity to power your house or your electric car, day or night.
Sunlight has the greatest chance of helping solve the world's energy problems.
4. Scientists will experiment more with this stuff and in the future we may be using solar energy instead of electricity.
5. It is hoped that within 10 years, homeowners will be able to power their homes in daylight through photovoltaic cells, while using excess solar energy to produce hydrogen and oxygen to power their own household fuel cell.
6. How they acually convert the sun into energy.
7. It's a good thing that scientists have discovered this since this could help improve the enviroment.
8. How is the sun's energy able to power things?
